School Counseling Program
Individual counseling is a component of Ms. Fernando's role at Hawthorne School. Students are seen for emotional, behavioral and academic concerns. Referrals are typically given to her from the teacher, parent or self-referrals made by students. Students are seen on a weekly basis and sometimes are seen in groups depending on the issue that arises.

Students at risk meet with Ms. Fernando due to low grades on their progress reports and report cards. Parents and students meet with Ms. Fernando to help set goals for academic achievement.

The Student Study Team is a part of Ms. Fernando's role in helping with academic and behavioral difficulties. The team meets on a regular basis to help identify ways to help students with their success at school.

Testing is another aspect of Ms. Fernando's role with regards to GATE testing and STAR testing. GATE testing is administered in the fall and in the spring. Students are tested in a group while others are tested on an individual basis. STAR testing is coordinated with the assistant principal and is conducted in the spring semester. Results are analyzed and data is compiled in order to better meet the needs of the students.

Classroom lessons are provided by Ms. Fernando to primary, intermediate grades and to the 6th grade. The school counselor teaches lessons on the district's character theme of 'Caring' as well as playground topics, and grade level situations that may arise in a school day.

The 4th and 5th Grade Conflict Manager Program is coordinated by Ms. Fernando along with Ms. Palmigiano who oversees the program. The program begins in the fall with an application and interview process in which 30-35 students are chosen. The students are then trained to help students in grades K-3 solve their friendship difficulties on the playground. The program has been in effect for 10 years and is a success with the primary students.

Student Council is coordinated by Ms. Fernando and Ms. Moss. Students apply for a position and run for the office and are elected by their peers. Student council meets once a week and plans fundraising events, promotes school spirit, plans middle school dances and other general middle school functions.

Ms. Fernando works full time and works to meet the needs of the students, staff and the parents. An appointment can be set up or she can reached by email.
